Home: The Part of You That You Forgot Is in Charge

In the chaos of modern life, we often search for something to anchor us—a place, a person, a sense of belonging. We call this “home.” But what if home isn’t outside of us? What if it’s the part of you that you forgot was in charge all along?

From The Yielding Warrior’s perspective, home is not a physical place; it’s a state of being where your mind, body, breath, energy, and spirit align. It’s where you remember your inner authority—the part of you that knows how to yield, adapt, and grow through life’s challenges. When we lose touch with this inner home, we feel untethered, constantly reacting to the outside world. However, when we rediscover it, we realize that we’ve always had the tools to navigate life from a place of balance and strength.

Forgetting Who’s in Charge

In today’s world, it’s easy to forget who’s running the show.

  • The Mind races with endless thoughts, replaying the past or worrying about the future.
  • The Body feels the impact—tight shoulders, shallow breath, chronic fatigue.
  • The Emotions take over, leading to overwhelm, frustration, or disconnect.

We mistake these fleeting experiences for who we are. We live at the mercy of external pressures—work demands, family obligations, and society’s expectations—forgetting that home is the part of us that can center and regulate all these forces.

But here’s the truth: your mind, body, and emotions are not in charge unless you let them be. They are tools, but you—the deeper, grounded self—are the one holding the reins.

Home Is Found in the Practice of Yielding

In The Yielding Warrior, we embrace the principle of yielding—a practice of learning to flow with life rather than resist it. Yielding doesn’t mean giving up or shrinking back; it means trusting yourself to respond with grace, wisdom, and adaptability. It’s the key to returning to your inner home.

The path back home lies in the 5 Regulations:

  1. Regulating the Body
The body is the first gateway to home. By developing physical awareness through practices like Tai Chi, Qigong, and mindful movement, you reconnect to the present moment. The tension begins to release, and the body remembers how to yield to its natural state of ease.
    • Action Step: Spend 5 minutes daily practicing gentle, flowing movements or stretches. Focus on how your body feels, not how it looks.
  2. Regulating the Breath
Breath is the bridge between body and mind. When life feels overwhelming, the breath often becomes shallow and restricted. Regulating the breath allows you to calm the nervous system and bring your awareness back home.
    • Action Step: Practice deep, rhythmic breathing—inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 6. Feel your breath ground you.
  3. Regulating the Mind
Your mind can be a loud, unruly place, but it doesn’t have to be in charge. By cultivating mindfulness, you can observe your thoughts without being ruled by them. You don’t silence the mind; you yield to its natural flow.
    • Action Step: Sit quietly for 2 minutes. Watch your thoughts like clouds passing by. Notice them, but let them float away.
  4. Regulating the Energy
Energy—your life force—must be nurtured and directed intentionally. When you scatter your energy outward, you feel drained. Regulating it means drawing that energy back home and learning to move through life with intention.
    • Action Step: Take moments throughout the day to pause, breathe, and “gather” your energy inward, visualizing it returning to your core.
  5. Regulating the Spirit
The spirit is where your sense of purpose and connection live. It’s the part of you that remembers you are more than your circumstances. When you reconnect with this deeper essence, you realize that home has always been within you.
    • Action Step: Spend a few minutes each day reflecting on what gives you meaning. Ask yourself, “What truly matters to me?”

You Are the One in Charge

Coming home is not about controlling life—it’s about remembering that you are the calm within the storm. You are the observer of your mind, the caretaker of your body, the guide of your emotions, and the source of your energy.

When you practice yielding and regulating yourself, you stop living reactively and start leading intentionally. Home becomes a state of being you can access anywhere, at any time.
