Why “Just Do This Practice” Is Terrible Advice

Search “Tai Chi benefits” tonight and you’ll find someone insisting standing meditation is essential. Search again tomorrow and you’ll find someone just as confident that it’s a waste of time compared to moving forms. One video swears by Yin-style breathing. The next tells you Yang-style is the only way to build real power. If you’re new to the meditative arts, or even years into your practice and trying to go deeper, this isn’t guidance. It’s noise, and it can talk you out of the very practice that would have worked for you.

What 32 Years of Teaching Actually Taught Me

Here’s what the internet won’t tell you: the advice isn’t wrong, it’s just answering the wrong question. After three decades of teaching Tai Chi, Qigong, and Yiquan, the pattern became impossible to miss. People don’t walk through the door for the same reason twice. Some come for performance, athletes and musicians and artists chasing an edge in their craft. Some come for the therapeutic side, often the elder demographic hoping to age with more grace and more years in the body. Some are drawn to the medical foundation, the Qi theory underneath all of Chinese medicine. Some come for the philosophical dimension, the way this practice widens how you see everything, not just how you move. And some come for the spiritual path, the kind of study that unfolds over an entire lifetime and never fully finishes.

Five different doors, five different reasons to walk through them. And the practice that serves one of those doors best is rarely the practice that serves another. That’s not a flaw in the meditative arts. It’s the reason a single “best practice” recommendation was always going to fail you. The breathing exercise that transforms a performance athlete’s recovery isn’t necessarily what a grieving beginner needs from standing meditation. The video insisting you’re doing it wrong probably isn’t wrong, it’s just talking to somebody who came in through a different door than you did.

There’s a second layer to this too. Even once you know your door, the practice that serves you in year one isn’t the practice that serves you in year ten. What builds your foundation early on stops being enough as your understanding deepens, and the practices that once felt advanced eventually become the new floor. A real practice has to evolve with you, or it stalls out, which is exactly what happens to so many self-taught practitioners grinding away for ten or fifteen years with real discipline but no real guidance, barely scratching the surface of what their training could actually give them.

Stop Guessing. Start Building the Right Practice for You.

This is exactly why the Yielding Warrior Method exists, and it’s exactly what the video walks you through. Instead of guessing which practice to trust this week, you’ll see how to identify which of the five paths you’re actually walking, and why that changes everything about which ritual, active, and philosophical practices belong in your training. You’ll understand the strategic difference between Yin and Yang style breathing, what standing meditation is actually doing for you and which postures matter for your goal, and how to build movement practice that compounds instead of plateaus. This is the difference between a decade of scattered effort and a decade of practice that keeps deepening.

You don’t have to navigate this alone, and you don’t have to keep sorting through contradictory videos hoping one of them happens to match what you actually need. Watch the video to see exactly how the five paths work and which one is speaking to you right now. If you want a guided starting point, the free two-week challenge is built to introduce you to all three pillars, ritual, active, and philosophical, so you can start feeling out your own direction. Thirty-two years of teaching went into building this so you don’t have to spend thirty-two years figuring it out the hard way. Hit play, and let’s get you on the right path.
